Social Shedding: Shopping Mall

Social Shedding, is a site-responsive performance with a garment constructed from traditional Korean funereal fiber interweaved with a spiraling zipper, allowing the dress to alter shape and transform. The performance generates a delicate dynamic between strangers and myself that shifts according to the social locus. Depending on the environment or locale, whether it be a nightclub, opera house, or art opening, I become a different object/subject and point of interaction opening up new dialogue.

Map of the Heart, series

Map of the Heart is a series of participatory, public art projects combining true stories and the collective imagination of the individuals of a community to develop audience-interactive visual fictions: an interactive photo book, and an interactive, public performance with a wearable constructed with photos and text.
The process begins by following 20– 30 participants of each city through their daily activities and take photos and collect their stories.
It begins on a very personal, individual level and develops outward into the community in which it occurs to explore each person’s relationship with their social environment.

The project has been done in Sandnes, Norway; Santa Fe, NM, USA; and Chicago,IL, USA is in progress. To follow up with the process of the project, please visit http://maphearts.wordpress.com/

In Collaboration with Jung A. Woo

Movable Feast is a public art project developed by artists Hoyun Son & Jung-A Woo in 2009, that maps a diverse cultural landscape through food.

Through out our Artist in Residency with Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in summer 2011, the artists, youth group-Latin America Community Center (LACC), and horticulture society will research and gather local edible weeds; collect, map, and illustrate recipes from family, friends, and neighbors; plan and design a Feast Event-cook and share food with the public in and around a mobile kitchen built by the community. During the process, Movable Feast activities has been documented by the participants on a collaborative website.

FYI, For Your Information

It is a site-specific, interactive voice installation: parody of Speech Recognition Technology. Through the use of voice recognition customer service systems incorporated with the site-specific subjects, it brings out the frustration of miscommunication between human and machine and/or human with different linguistic and social backgrounds in a humorous approach.

“FYI, For Your Information, which is repeated in a few inconspicuous places all over the gallery. The installations consist of constructed information phone booths, appropriately colored in red and white. Upon picking up the receiver and becoming an active participant in the installation, one is confronted with an automated recorded system much like most telephonic customer service centers. Proceeding through the voice prompts that Hoyun Son has created, it becomes apparent that the entire piece acts as an analysis of what it means to be American. Such an issue is extremely apropos of the current political climate within this country, but would be thought provoking and meaningful regardless. Hoyun Son has reconstructed a now commonplace experience into social commentary that is so superbly subtle that it is entirely unsettling.” (from review by Tara Foster,2006)
