Social Shedding I: Shopping Mall, on July 17th, 2010 @ Pioneer Place & PLACE, Downtown Portland, OR

Social Shedding: Shopping Mall, Portland OR Performance by Hoyun Son, Camera by Gary Wiseman, Gabe Flores

Social Shedding I, is a site-responsive performance with a garment constructed from traditional Korean funereal fiber interweaved with a spiraling zipper, allowing the dress to alter shape and transform. The performance generates a delicate dynamic between strangers and myself that shifts according to the social locus. Depending on the environment or locale, whether it be a nightclub, opera house, or art opening, I become a different object/subject and point of interaction opening up new dialogue.

is a series of site-responsive travel performance and installations. First of the series was done during the artist's residency in Sandnes, Norway 2009. In Sandnes, Norway she followed 12 local residents for 12-19 hours each to their work, home, and their everyday activity. At the end of the day, she invited them to her studio and asked them to draw their subjective map of Sandnes and collected their stories related to specific sites. Out of the true stories, Hoyun developed a fictional story interweaving the 12 locals who may and may not know each other and presented with film posters and a website on touch-screen telling the non-linear film through photos and texts.

The installation is showcased in KINOKINO, Sandnes, Norway from December 9th 2009- February 7th 2010. The website of Map of Heart, Sandnes will be available online after February 7th 2010.

Bla

is a single channel video piece made in collaboration with Charles Gaines. It is featuring a woman, myself, who is listening to Lightnin' Hopkins (American Blues musician from 60s) classic, intently while the recording plays. When the song ends, the woman, a Korean, begins to sing Hopkins's tune acapella.  Black Ghost Blues Redux visits the idea of the politics that is at the foundation of the conversion of cultures brought on both by the history of colonialism and slavery.  It locates a history shared by Black and Korean cultures even though each culture's narrative is quite different. It sees that history as a starting point of a new narrative rather than just a reminder of that history.

site-specific, interactive voice installation: parody of Speech Recognition Technology. Through the use of phone cuntomer service systems incorporated with the site-specific subjects, it brings out the frustration of miscommunication between human and machine and/or human with different lingustic and social backgrounds in a humorous approach.
